Professor Dr. Markus Kurscheidt has been the Chair of Sport Science II at the University of Bayreuth since October 2011 (after a one-semester deputy professorship and rejection of a W3 appointment at the University of Tübingen).

Among other tasks, he heads the examination board for Sport, Business & Law and the admissions committee for the master's programme. Most recently, he held a deputy professorship (W2) for Labour Market Research in Sport (including Head of the Career Service) at the Institute for Sports Economics and Sports Management at the German Sports University Cologne (2010-11). Before that, Professor Kurscheidt was a research associate as a lecturer and coordinator in the field of Sports Management (SPM) at the Faculty of Sports Science of the Ruhr-University Bochum (2001-10; Post-Doc from Oct. 2006). His responsibilities there included developing the field of Sports Management and further developing it in the BA-/MA-System. After studying abroad at the Université de Liège (Liège), Belgium (1993-94), and obtaining his degree in economics (Oct. 1996), he first held business administration and economics chairs at the University of Paderborn (1996-2000) and graduate scholarships from the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (2000-01). In January 2007, the Paderborn Faculty of Economics awarded him a doctorate with distinction for a thesis on the economic analysis of major sporting events. Among other things, he acquired two extensive research projects on team sport and on mega sporting events at the Federal Institute for Sports Science (BISp) and most recently a major primary empirical project for the FIFA Women's World Cup 2011, financed by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (mainly leading roles in a dozen third-party funded projects) and also works internationally on football world championships.

He recently recruited a DAAD Visiting Chair of Sports Ecology. He has also led practice projects, advised in a freelance capacity on sports sponsorship and sports policy and is in demand as an interview partner. He has given talks at numerous conferences worldwide in his research focuses on governance, institutional and political economics in empirical application to sport (especially sports facilities, sports events, sports policy, health sport, team sport and fan culture) and has published in international anthologies and journals. He is an expert for the National Institute Economic Review, European Sport Management Quarterly, Journal of Sport Management, International Journal of Sport Finance, International Journal of Sports Marketing & Sponsorship as well as Sports Science and Sport & Society, an active member of the Arbeitskreis Sportökonomie (AK), founding member and vice-president and founding editor of the journal International Association of Sports Economists (IASE) and co-initiator of the European Research Network on Events, Sports and Tourism (EURNEST).

As co-organiser, he hosted the joint annual conference 2006 of IASE and AK in Bochum.
